Cate Blanchett shines as she attends the highly anticipated premiere of The Hobbit and is welcomed by thousands of screaming fans It's been almost ten years since the last Lord of the Rings film premiered, so it's no wonder fans of the Tolkien penned saga showed up in hordes to finally see a new installment. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey premiered under the screams of thousands of fans in Wellington, New Zealand on Wednesday, who all welcomed the star-studded cast and crew back with most of them dressed as characters from the Middle Earth drama.

Although noticeable absent was Sir Ian McKellen, better know as Gandalf, who couldn't make the trip to New Zealand but thanked fans for their enthusiasm via a video message which was played to the crowd. 31-year-old Elijah reprises the role that shot him to stardom, Frodo Baggins, and told red carpet reporters it felt like coming home. 'This is echoing in the past for me,' said the star.
